Perugia
Perugia is the main town of Umbria and is situated on a hill that rises on the Tiber Valley, not far from Lake Trasimeno and Mount Subasio. Perugia was originally an Etruscan city (Gio) and became a Roman town since 295 BC It was later dominated and destroyed by the Ostrogoths and then was conquered by the Lombards. Nell’IX century declared free city and became a very important center. Perugia then spent a period of strong internal conflicts due to the interests of various dominions against the power of the city. From 1540 Perugia was under the direct rule of the Church (except during the Napoleonic period) until 1860 when the city was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy. Cathedral of San Lorenzo: This church is the risutato enlargement of an older church (X century) and has never reached the cmpletamento. Has a structure of three aisles in the late Gothic style, supported by large octagonal pillars.
Cuisine and Wine: The typical gastronomy of Perugia is based on the use of simple and wholesome ingredients like olive oil produced on the spot and the black truffle. A feature of the kitchen recipe Perugia is the “Easter pizza,” a pie flavored with cheese. Among the main courses there is a wide variety of meat (pork, cingiale, lamb) and fish of Lake Trasimeno (a typical recipe is the “tegamaccio”, a very special fish soup flavored).
